Absurdly, a totalitarian state that dominated most of Europe was unable to do much about Jackie and his paw-raising parody of Germany's Fuehrer.

In the middle of World War II — months before Hitler ordered some 4.5 million troops to invade the Soviet Union — the Foreign Office in Berlin commanded its diplomats in the Nazi-friendly Nordic country to gather evidence on the dog, and even came up with plans to destroy the pharmaceutical wholesale company of its owner.
The dog, Jackie, was a mutt owned by Tor Borg, a businessman from the Finnish city of Tampere. Borg's wife Josefine, a German citizen known for her anti-Nazi sentiments, dubbed the dog Hitler because of the strange way it raised its paw high in the air like Germans greeting the Fuehrer with a cry of "Heil Hitler!"

Stricter Regulations for Breeders in Missouri

Down With Puppy Mills - Missouri has a bad reputation as when it comes to neglect and abuse at puppy mills. Many high-profile cases dog abuse have made headlines and gotten the attention of groups such as the Humane Society. In the recent election, a ballot initiative to fight animal abuse at puppy mills, "Proposition B" was narrowly passed. (gaining just 51% of the vote?!)

While the passage of Prop B is a small victory for animal rights activists, farmers from Missouri complain that the passage will lead to further restrictions on breeders and livestock farmers. The measure was overwhelmingly defeated in rural areas, but gained support closer to civilization where people have teeth, distrust Glenn Beck, and love their pets.

More than 80% of the money funding the bill came from activists and concerned groups outside of Missouri. Critics argue that the measure won't stop dog abuse, but might actually put reputable breeders out of business. The new law limits dog breeders to a maximum of 50 breeding animals, and will take effect starting in 2011. read article

Proof that Dogs Will Eat Anything - Although the recent discovery of a 50,000+ year old Woolly Mammoth in Siberia is scientifically very significant, the part of the story that will stay with me is not about the potential scientific value or rarity of the find.

I can't get past this line in the middle of the story: "The ice-encased body had been partially eaten by foxes which devoured the trunk and the top of its head." As if that wasn't bad enough, note that "the carcass was harboring very old but potentially lethal germs, most probably anthracis, which can cause anthrax and black lung disease."

Basically, what this means is that members of the Canidae Family, which includes dogs and foxes, will apparently eat anything. These foxes didn't hesitate when a rotten 50,000 year old anthrax-infested piece of mammoth trunk meat poked its way out of the ice, and my dogs wouldn't have either.

There is no word yet whether Alpo will begin testing "mammoth" canned meat, but i think it's already included in their "Mixed Grill" flavor.

Pickles the World Cup Dog

Pickles: The Dog Who Saved the World Cup

As part of the publicity campaign for England hosting the 1966 World Cup, the World Cup Trophy (then a smaller version called the "Jules Rimet Trophy") was displayed in several different places around England. Protected by 5 guards, the trophy was residing for a time at the Methodist Central Hall in the Westminster section of London.

One day when the guards were distracted on a break, thieves broke in and grabbed the valuable trophy, holding it for ransom. The theft caused a sensation in the British and World Press, and its return became the top priority of Scotland Yard.

The thieves demanded £15,000 ransom for the trophy's return, which Scotland Yard reluctantly agreed to. As one of the thieves led officials to the location, he noticed a trailing police van which spooked the thief, and wrecked the ransom deal.

Later in the week, with the World Cup trophy missing, a dog named "Pickles" was out with his owner in South London when he spotted something suspicious under a hedge near the sidewalk. After some pulling and digging, Pickles dragged a package out that was wrapped in newspaper and held together with string. Pickles presented the parcel to his owner, David Corbet, who quickly unwrapped it, revealing the valuable World Cup trophy.

Although police were initially suspicious of the story, they soon cleared Pickles and Corbett, and they became national heroes in England. They were given a cash reward, and Pickles even starred in a feature movie called, "The Spy With the Cold Nose."

When the English team won the World Cup later that year, they invited Pickles to the celebration banquet and let him lick all of their plates clean!

Total Pet Supply Reviews
I've done extensive searching online & read a lot of Total Pet Supply reviews, and they are mixed. Older reviews complain of mediocre customer service, (which seems to have improved) and the main complaints in the newer reviews center around slow shipping (8-12 days is what they quote on their site) and expensive shipping for smaller orders. (see above about how orders under $100 don't qualify for free shipping, and pay a flat $9.95 shipping rate)

In any event, it seems that there is a trade off with discount pet medication stores: the lower the prices and more coupons offered, the lower the satisfaction with shipping times and customer service. The main reason for this is due to the fact that the only way you can get medications so cheaply is by getting them outside of the United States. Proof of Dog World Rule? Government officials scrambled to control damage today after uncensored video and still photos of a recent high level meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Committee were leaked onto the internet.

The images of the U.N. meeting room clearly show dogs (all apparently Dachshunds) making high level decisions for the 47 countries represented. Several of the dogs reportedly acted fondly of one another, although no actual humping was reported.

The images, which will certainly fuel conspiracy theories for years, were explained by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs as merely a "performance art project" by an Australian artist. When reporters' hands went up after Gibbs' brief explanation, witnesses say the White House fire alarm went off and everyone was quickly evacuated. Gibbs' later added that it was a coincidence that Bo, the White House Dog attended the briefing, was seated directly beneath the fire alarm when it was pulled.

A popular conspiracy theory blog online speculates that the dogs may have been gathering to discuss ways to fix recent human screw ups, including the Gulf oil spill and world economy.

A cash-strapped White House unveiled a new weapon in their surveillance program today, code-named the "Stealth Weiner" program. The terror alert level was raised to "Gray" today, after it was reported that one or more dogs have been attacked by terrorist squirrels.

According to Dick Cheney, these squirrels may be affiliated with the "radical" community organization, ACORN, and may be the SAME unpatriotic squirrels that have reportedly been stealing American Flags from a Michigan cemetary, although critics insist that there is no evidence to suggest that the events are related.

The attack happened shortly after President Obama made a speech addressing Middle Eastern leaders from Egypt, although it is not known if the events are related.

After making the accusations, Dick Cheney quickly returned to his Washington DC area bunker.

Dog Falls Overboard; Found 4 Months Later

AP- A pet dog that fell overboard in rough seas off Australia has been reunited with its owners after surviving alone on an island for four months, reports said.

Sophie Tucker, apparently named after a late US entertainer, fell overboard as Jan Griffith and her family sailed through choppy waters off the northeast Queensland coast in November.

The dog was believed to have drowned and Griffith said the family was devastated.

But out of sight of the family, Sophie Tucker was swimming doggedly and finally made it to St Bees Island, five nautical miles away, and began the sort of life popularised by the TV reality show "Survivor."

She was returned to her family last week when Griffith contacted rangers who had captured a dog that had been living off feral goats on the largely uninhabited island, in the faint hope it might be their long-lost pet.

When the Griffiths met the rangers' boat bringing the dog to the mainland they found that it was indeed Sophie Tucker on board.

"We called the dog and she started whimpering and banging the cage and they let her out and she just about flattened us," Griffith told the national AAP news agency.

"She wriggled around like a mad thing."

Griffith said that when the dog was first spotted on the island she had been in poor condition.

"And then all of a sudden she started to look good and it was when the rangers had found baby goat carcasses so she'd started eating baby goats."

Not sure which breed is best suited to survive a similar ordeal. I'm thinking that if various breeds were stranded together, there might be an interesting "Lord of the Flies" scenario." Thoughts?

The Jonas brothers are set to make their big screen feature film debut in Fox's "Walter the Farting Dog," Variety reports. The film, about a dog with a serious flatulence issues, is based on the bestselling book series by William Kotzwinkle and Glenn Murray.

"Walter" is set to include Nick, Joe and Kevin, plus younger brother Frankie. The movie is reportedly a possible directing project for Peter and Bobby Farrelly.

"By the time they've driven the dog home, everybody's head is out the window of the family station wagon but Frankie, and only because he has a serious sinus problem and doesn't notice the stench coming from Walter," Peter Farrelly told Variety of the movie.

AP: Executive Producer Steven Spielberg confirmed today that the script for Transformers 2 is already complete. However, Speilberg admits that the recent downturn in the economy has forced them to work with a "significantly lower" budget.

"The first movie relied on Dreamworks to create stunning visual effects. We were also able to sign relatively unknown Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox for the two lead roles. Since then, things have changed. Those actors now command a lot of money, plus, a lot of us were affected by the whole Madoff thing."

Minot, N.D. - A dog in North Dakota used a snowbank to climb onto the roof today. It is not known what motivated the dog to take such action, but some believe that the dog was protesting the latest government bailout of corporate "fat cats" announced today.

The new bailout will give another $800 billion in taxpayer money to failed banks, so that they may continue to dole out million dollar bonuses and continue with their failing business plans.

Dozens of people in Mecca were trampled today, after a popular blog posted the recipe for a dish consisting of 4 pounds of pork called the "bacon explosion."

Reports streamed in from all over the globe of chaos and riots in the street, as dog servants (aka dog "owners") scrambled to aquire one of the tasty 5000 calorie treats for their dogs.

The study, in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, looked at how dogs react when a buddy is rewarded for the same trick in an unequal way.

Researchers did a series of experiments with dogs who knew how to respond to the command "give the paw," or shake. The dogs were normally happy to repeatedly give the paw, whether they got a reward or not. 11/12/08 Seattle Examiner - Less than a week after the election, President-elect Barack Obama has learned that everyone who supported his election wants something in return and some of the requests are out of proportion with the significance of that support.

One of the first to come calling was a group that is eager to place a basset hound in the White House.

“Bassets are a dignified breed, and ready to handle any diplomatic tasks,” said Gretchen Shelby, president of the Society to Land Obama with a Basset Rescue (SLOBR). “And it is true that basset owners’ votes pushed him over the top this year. Well, not really. A scrubbing of the voter numbers showed that most basset owners voted for Obama, but were offset by their girlfriends and wives who hate the dogs and all they stand for. Said one source “It was a wash, which is a pretty appropriate word to use when talking about bassets.”

Obama exacerbated the situation last week, when he actually said that he wanted to get a dog for his daughters. He first milked it for political advantage, saying he would prefer to adopt a shelter dog, but soon backtracked, His eldest daughter has some allergies, and the chosen pup will need to have smooth skin that can be easily cleaned, and not a lot of hair.

Obama tried to make light of the situation by referring to himself as a "mutt," but it was too late. He was already in trouble on two fronts. The basset advocacy organization protested because you never see bassets in a shelter. And an independent group immediately accused Obama of discriminating against skin type.

"This is unacceptable," said pet activist Pete Bisket. "It's unbelievable that one of our new presidents' first important appointments is based on race. There is a reason that bassets should be disqualified. They smell."

Unemployed Scientists Prove Dog Likes Beer

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – A team of three out-of-work stem cell biologists announced Monday that, after four weeks of rigorous observation and field testing, the evidence conclusively shows that chief researcher Dr. Henry Rogers' dog Franklin likes beer.

Rogers and McCarthy measured the preferences of test subject Franklin.

"We're extremely pleased with the results of the experiment," Rogers said. "It exceeded our highest expectations, and we're confident that our findings will have far-reaching implications for the coming weekend."

According to the team's report, Rogers, along with colleagues Dr. Tom McCarthy and Dr. Simon Huang, formulated a hypothesis that Franklin, a purebred boxer, would drink beer poured into his water dish.

After scouring through couch cushions to secure funding for an initial test, the first round of experiments began in late February. Franklin was administered a sampling of six economy-priced beer brands in 12-ounce increments at the rate of one unit every 1.5 hours over several successive Saturdays. His tail-wagging, equilibrium, speed of consumption, and general playfulness were monitored throughout for variations from baseline norms.

While the scientists said the neutered 5-year-old subject showed no clear preference for any one brand, Franklin tended to lap up Presidente beer at the fastest rate, followed by Rolling Rock, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Milwaukee's Best, and lastly, Icehouse.

Franklin proved receptive to a variety of liquid-intake methods.

"Due to our limited resources, we were only able to obtain cases of the most inexpensive test materials," Huang said.

The team recently managed to secure a New Jersey state research subsidy of $2.55 by returning the empties.

McCarthy provided his Shar-Pei, Wrinkles, to serve as a control. Wrinkles was only given water to drink, though the team had to scrap one set of data due to confounding variables introduced when the control subject consumed 7.35 ounces of beer when the scientists' backs were turned.

Despite this setback, Rogers said that the team's data revealed a consistent correlation between increased quantity of beer intake and erratic behavior, though the intensity seemed to decrease with each subsequent day of testing. read more form The Onion

WASHINGTON - (Yahoo News, AP) More than 10,000 people have signed an online petition urging the Army to let an Iraqi puppy come home with a Minnesota soldier, who fears that "Ratchet" could be killed if left behind.

"I just want my puppy home," Sgt. Gwen Beberg of Minneapolis wrote to her mother in an e-mail Sunday from Iraq, soon after she was separated from the dog following a transfer. "I miss my dog horribly." Beberg, 28, is scheduled to return to the U.S. next month.

Ratchet's defenders are ratcheting up their efforts to save him. On Monday, the program coordinator for Operation Baghdad Pups, which is run by Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International, left for a trip to the Middle East to try to get the puppy to the U.S.

And last week, Beberg's congressman, Democrat Keith Ellison, wrote to the Army urging it to review the case.

Beberg and another soldier rescued the puppy from a burning pile of trash back in May. Defense Department rules prohibit soldiers in the U.S. Central Command, which includes Iraq, from adopting pets, but exceptions have been made. Operation Baghdad Pups says it has gotten 50 dogs and six cats transferred to the U.S. in the last eight months.

"I'm coping reasonably well because I refuse to believe that Ratchet has been hurt," Beberg wrote in the e-mail to her mother, Patricia Beberg. "If I find out that he was killed though — well, we just won't entertain that possibility."

The mother said her daughter sent another e-mail saying that she confirmed that the dog was still alive and doing OK.

Operation Baghdad Pups' program coordinator, Terry Crisp, is scheduled to arrive in Baghdad on Wednesday. Crisp said the adopted dogs left behind face death on Iraqi streets.

Buddy, the German Shepherd, not only can recognize when his companion is having a seizure, he can call for help too. It's the modern day version of Lassie running to save little Timmy in the well. John Stainaker of Scottsdale, Arizona, was having a severe seizure when his specially-trained German Shepherd, Buddy, picked up the phone and called 911. If you're like me, you may be wondering how Buddy's big old paws punched out 9-1-1 on the telephone. It seems Chihuahua paws might be better suited for such a task.

But the phone is designed so that if you hold down a button for more than three seconds, it automatically dispatches to the 911 operator. Buddy's teeth pressed down on the buttons and then he whimpered and whined to let the person on the other end know his companion needed help. All 911 operators are required to dispatch emergency personnel when called, even if they can't hear anyone on the other end of the line but a dog.

8.23.08 - London (AP) It has long been suspected that man's best friend has a special ability to sense when something is wrong with us. Now the first experiment to verify that scientifically has demonstrated that dogs are able to smell cancer.

Experts say it's unlikely that pooches will become practical partners in cancer detection any time soon, but the results of the study, outlined this week in the British Medical Journal, are promising.

They show that when urine from bladder cancer patients was set out among samples from healthy people or those with other diseases, the dogs – all ordinary pets – were able to identify the cancer patients' urine almost three times more often than would be expected by chance alone.

When Nina Waltl takes her dogs Bunn and Chicho for their morning walk along Tonquin Beach in Tofino, she keeps an eye out for local wildlife, aware of her proximity to the wilderness and wild creatures that may also be out for a stroll.

That's why she was wary Monday morning of a river otter she had seen a few times recently around the creek on the far side of the beach but never thought it could pose a serious harm to herself or her dogs.

The tide was low and Bunn had wandered ahead to the creek and into the shallow water when Waltl spotted the otter's head pop out of the creek.

Moments later, without warning, the otter began attacking the four and a half year old Staffordshire terrier.

She could see the otter splashing in the water but even as she yelled and her dog struggled to get away, the otter still didn't back off.

Only when she managed to get Bunn back onto the sand did she notice how seriously the gentle terrier had been hurt, her chest was bloody and had numerous punctures.

"Everybody knows about cougars, wolves and bears," said Waltl. "No one would ever think an otter could be so dangerous."

Two homeowners in Gilbert, Ariz. will be able to sleep much easier now that a cat that had been trapped in the walls of their new home has been captured. But now they have to deal with rebuilding the interior of their house.

Wayne Berkowitz and his wife moved into their new home, but it came with an unwanted option that ended with a lot of destruction; a cat trapped in the walls.

Berkowitz says he has listened to the cat crying behind the walls of his home for a couple of weeks. Finally he called the builder for help and that's when the destruction of his new home began.

At first the ceiling in his living room was torn down. Over a period of several days, holes were smashed into walls; exterior walls were cut away, making the home unlivable.

Finally, Thursday morning after two more holes were cut into walls in the master bathroom, the kitty was caught.

Officials with the homebuilder, K Hovnanian Homes, say the company is going to make sure everything is "right" for the Berkowitz family.

Wayne Berkowitz says the builder is going to fix all of the damage in the home free of charge and while the work is being done the homebuilder is putting them up in a hotel and making the first mortgage payment.
