White House Dog Search Narrows

1/12/09 AP
President-elect Barack Obama said Sunday the soon-to-be first family's long search for a pooch is nearly over, with two breeds in a dogfight to move into the White House, the Portugese water hound, left, and the Labradoodle.

It'll probably either be a "Labradoodle" or a "Portuguese water hound,'' Obama told George Stephanopoulos on ABC News' This Week -- revealing that he still has a little homework of his own to do. That's a Portuguese water dog, a pedigree pup -- "known for centuries along Portugal's coast,'' the American Kennel Club notes, "this seafaring breed was prized by fishermen for a spirited, yet obedient nature, and a robust, medium build that allowed for a full day's work in and out of the water. ''

But those Labradoodles sure are popular. A designer hybrid generally accepted as an informal breed of its own now, yet not recognized by the AKC, the mix of Labrador retriever and Poodle is a spirited and bouncy pooch. story

What is RIMADYL? Rimadyl for dogs, (often misspelled as Rimmadyl, Rimadil, or Rimmadil) is a prescription non-steroidal anti-inflamatory medication that is often prescribed as a pain reliever for inflammation associated with arthritis (osteoarthritis) in dogs. It is available to buy in both caplet form, as well as chewable tablets. Both the caplets and chewables are available in dosages of 25mg, 50mg, 75mg, and 100mg.

A generic version of Rimadyl, called NOVOX, is available online as well. This cheaper version of the medication has the same active ingredient, carprofen, and like most generics, is available at a discounted price. At this time, the Novox pills are about 10% cheaper than the Rimadyl caplets in a similar dosage, and a prescription is required for both. Although wholesale discounts are not given directly, buying more will often qualify you for free shipping, as well as other tiered discount coupons.

Rimadyl Dosage: You can usually calculate the dosage for your dog at 1mg/pound every 12 hours. (or 2mg per lb every day) Example: a 50lb dog will need 50mg twice a day, totaling 100mg each day. The actual number of pills given will vary, depending on the dosage / strength of each Rimadyl pill. In this case the dog could take 2 halves of the 100mg pill, two 50mg pills, or four of the 25mg pills to total 100mg for the day. (chewable or caplet)

Rimadyl side effects are usually gastrointestinal, although a complete list of side effects is available directly from the store, or from Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that makes it. The Rimadyl reviews online are generally very positive, with some people going so far as to say “This pain medicine is a God-send…” and, "My dog is 16...what an amazing difference!”

Dogs Experience Jealousy

Dogs have an intuitive understanding of fair play and become resentful if they feel that another dog is getting a better deal, a new study has found.

The study, in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, looked at how dogs react when a buddy is rewarded for the same trick in an unequal way.

Researchers did a series of experiments with dogs who knew how to respond to the command "give the paw," or shake. The dogs were normally happy to repeatedly give the paw, whether they got a reward or not. But that changed if they saw that another dog was being rewarded with a piece of food, while they received nothing.
